Dear Yi Chia,
With nearly 95,000 actions taken to help end Canada’s commercial seal hunt, your support is making a huge difference.
In just the last few months:
- Your support enabled us to show the world the tragic truth about what is happening to the hundreds of thousands of baby seals who died as a result of poor ice conditions or at the hands of sealers.
- One of the largest processors of sealskins in Canada, Carino Company Limited, is offering only about half the price it paid in 2006 for top quality beater sealskins this year, stating that at the end of last year “all sales stopped”.
- Austria and France declared their intention to ban the import of seal products. They join the US, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Mexico and Croatia in speaking out against Canada's cruel, unsustainable, and unnecessary slaughter of harp seal pups.
Scientists continue to warn us that the current level of killing cannot be maintained without placing the harp seal population at unnecessary and significant risk of depletion. The tragic effects of global warming this year have made these warnings even more dire.

In the coming year, IFAW will continue to alert politicians and the public to the many problems with the hunt, document alleged violations of the Marine Mammal Regulations and support crucial scientific research on harp seal population issues.
You can continue to increase the pressure on Canada by telling friends and family to join our campaign and by keeping the issue alive in the editorial pages of your local newspaper and on blogs and message boards.
I have no doubt that with your help we will end the hunt, no matter how long it takes. Thank you for your continued support during the tragic events we witnessed this year in Canada.
For the seals,
Director, IFAW Asia Pacific
